He froze. 

He could’t t believe those words had come from Chloe. 

Not from the shy, soft–spoken young woman who always 

acted innocent around him. 

Then he heard her laugh again. 

“The Avery thing is over.” 

“I covered my tracks.” 

Nobody will ever find out.” 

The guy finally gave me the video.” 

I showed my friends.” 

You should have seen how much she screamed.” 

It felt amazing.” 

She called me a homewrecker in front of the whole firm.” 

“She deserved it.” 

“That woman was practically ancient, anyway.” 

The rest of the sentence died in her throat.. 

Ethan angrily pushed open the door. 

‘Chloe.” 

She turned around. 

Her phone slipped from her hand. 

“Ethan?” 

“What are you doing here?” 

He stepped toward her. 

His voice was hoarse. 

“So it really was you.” 

“You did this.” 

Chloe’s face went pale. 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” 

Ethan grabbed her shoulders. 

“You hurt Avery.” 

“She said a few things about you.” 

*How could you do something like this?” 

Tears filled Chloe’s eyes. 

‘I don’t understand,” 

‘You’re frightening me.” 

But before she could finish speaking. 

Ethan pulled out his phone. 

He had been recording. 

Her expression changed instantly. 

“You recorded me?” 

Stop pretending.” 

“It’s too late.” 

Tell the police everything.” 

She lunged for the phone. 

He pulled it away. 

She grabbed his wrist. 

“That’s fake.” 

I was just bragging to my friends.” 

“I wanted to show them how much you cared about me.” 

“That doesn’t mean anything.” 

“Truth and lies can be sorted out later.” 

Ethan’s mouth tightened. 

“I was an idiot.” 

“I spent all night proving you were innocent. 

“I never stopped to ask whether you were actually the person 

behind this.” 

Chloe stared at him. 

She realized she had nowhere left to go. 

Slowly, she wiped away the tears. 

Then she smiled. 

It was twisted. 

“Yes.” 

“It was me.” 

“So what?” 

She suddenly threw her arms around his waist. 

Ethan, don’t forget.” 

“You already defended me.” 

“If this gets out, your career goes down with mine.” 

“We’re both in this now.” 

“Why not keep going?” 

‘Don’t tell me you never cared about me.”
