My Husband Was Getting Married Again, So I Called the Police Chapter 02
The next day, Diane’s friend came back with what he had found.
Emily Warren, twenty–nine, from Lakeview, unemployed.
She owned a property.
It was in a complex on the west side of Lakeview.
The deed was recorded in May of 2022.
Purchase price was 600 thousand dollars, paid in cash. I ran the numbers.
Between January and May of that year, David had wired her more than 200 thousand dollars.
So where had the rest come from?
I went into his retirement account.
In April of 2022, he had pulled out 170 thousand dollars.
He told me that the money went toward the mortgage.
I believed him back then.
Now I knew it had gone into her down payment.
A 600 thousand dollar house.
The 200 thousand he wired her, plus the 170 thousand from the retirement account. That left
230 thousand unaccounted for.
I went through his brokerage account..
In March of 2022, he had liquidated everything and walked away with 240 thousand dollars.
That money belonged to both of us.
We had bought those positions after we married.
He told me he had taken a loss.
In fact, he had cashed out to buy a house for hist mistress.
I organized every piece of it.
I made three copies.
One went to the cloud.
One went to Diane.
And one went on a flash drive locked away at my parents‘ house.
Diane said, “There’s still one piece you need.”
“What?”
“The license itself. You need a copy, or the registration record from the city hall.”
“How do I get it?”
“On the day of that wedding, while everything is loud, get into their room and look for it.”
I thought it over.
“And if I can’t find it?”
“Then call the police and let them pull it from the clerk.”
“Don’t I need evidence before they’ll take a report?”
“You have the photo,” Diane said. “That’s enough to file. Once they open an investigation, the
registration record comes out of it.”
I nodded.
“There’s one more thing,” I said.
“What is it?”
“Should I tell Margaret?”
Diane looked at me.
“Do you want to tell her?” she asked.
I was quiet for a moment.
Margaret had been decent enough to me over the, years.
But her son always came first..
Last year, David said he wanted a new car.
She handed him 70 thousand dollars without blinking.
When I was pregnant, the sickness was brutal.
She said, “Every woman throws up. Put up with it and it passes.”
The month I spent in the hospital trying to keep that pregnancy, she never came once.
won’t tell her,” I said.
Diane nodded.
“Good. If she takes his side and warns him, you lose your advantage.”
I kept planning.
The wedding was in two days.
I had already found the hotel.
It was a five–star place in Lakeview, and they had the banquet hall.
There were more than a hundred names on the guest list.
The bride’s parents, and on the groom’s side.
Wait. The groom’s side? I looked at the booking details again, carefully.
There was exactly one name on the groom’s side. That was Margaret.
My hands started shaking.
So she knew about this.
And she was going to their wedding.
Then it hit me.
Last week, Margaret had said she was going to Lakeview to visit relatives.
She said she would be gone for a week.
She had gone to her son’s second wedding.
I laughed until my face was wet.
Eight years.
I had waited on that entire family for eight years.
When Margaret got sick, I took time off to look after her.
Every holiday, I was the one buying all the gifts.
Her granddaughter’s school runs and tuition were all handled by me.
And what did I get for it?
She went to her son’s wedding to his mistress.
So what did that make me?
A clown?
I wiped away my tears.
I picked up my phone.
I called Margaret.
“Margaret, how’s the trip going?”
“It’s lovely. Good food, good sleep, the relatives are treating me well.”
Her voice was completely normal.
She didn’t sound the least bit guilty.
“When are you coming back? Sarah’s been asking for you.”
“In a couple of days. Take good care of Sarah.”
“I will.”
I hung up.
All right.
So we were all family.
Then all of them could go down together.
