The Gamma He Thought Could Survive Anything Chapter 02
The rain hadn’t let up.
By the time I came downstairs after my shower, the dining room was already full.
Ophelia waved me over, a plate of peeled shrimp in front of her.
Theron finished peeling another plate and slid it
toward me. Then he set my utensils and served me, smooth as always.
His expression was calm, his voice gentle.
“Lyra, eat up. Shrimp. Your favorite.”
It was as if our argument had never happened.
That was how he’d always been.
No matter how bad the fight, next morning he’d just
move on like nothing happened.
Every time, he’d just watch me fall apart and say, “Wasting time on emotions isn’t efficient.”
But I wasn’t efficient like Theron, or emotionally blunt like Ophelia.
Problems that were never resolved always left my wolf aching until I couldn’t sleep.
Ophelia winked at me.
“Isn’t Theron great at this? I trained him myself.”
He really was good at loving people.
The table was covered with spicy stew, sour broth, and
Thai curry. All Ophelia’s favorites.
Nothing I could eat.
“Too bad I can’t eat spicy food.”
Theron’s hand paused for a moment.
Then he poured me a bowl of plain water and pushed it over.
“No big deal. Rinse it off and you can eat it.”
“Don’t pick a fight. She’s been exhausted hunting
inspiration for her film. Good food helps.”
I slowly lowered my fork.
Beside me, Ophelia’s cheeks were flushed from the
spicy food as she sighed happily.
“Last stop. Drop Lyra off, then home. I miss my bed already.”
I corrected her. “You’re not dropping me off. You’re going to Mossridge for your shot.”
Theron looked up.
“Why so paranoid? It’s just a saying. Do you have to take everything so literally?”
lad
“Yes. Someone once told me this was my graduation trip. I believed him.”
Back in college, they traveled everywhere. I couldn’t. No money, no time.
I worked and scraped for scholarships.
For this graduation trip, I’d saved every dime and redid
the itinerary over a dozen times.
In the end, it became Ophelia’s film shoot.
Where to go, what to see–all her call.
Theron stiffened for a second before impatience crept into his voice.
“I told you. She’s submitting to an international
festival. This matters. Is fun more important than her future?”
“We’re a team. Being petty drags everyone down.”
I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.
He turned away, his expression settling back into calm.
“Don’t use tears as a weapon. It’s cheap.”
I wiped my face and finally realized it was wet with cold tears.
Freshman year, Ophelia gave me his contact. But I was
too busy hustling for tuition to date.
Then Mom got worse.
I broke down outside the Pack Hospital, couldn’t afford the surgery.
That’s when Theron showed up.
After that, everything seemed to fall into place.
My mother had the operation. She survived.
That night, I’d dozed off in a chair.
He brought me soup, gently wiped a tear away.
“Your tears are precious. Don’t waste them on me.”
Now, same tears, but suddenly I was cheap.
Dinner ended in silence.
Back in my room, Ophelia sent me a flood of videos.
[Edit my PackTok vlog.]
Besides directing short films, Ophelia was also a fairly popular content creator.
Theron always said helping her save time made the whole team more efficient.
So Ophelia dumped all the editing on me. She’d always
said, “My time’s for real creative work.”
But why? Why was my time worthless?
I replied: [Editing your personal account isn’t my job.]
No more messages came after that.
I believed in finishing what I’d started.
I copied the finals onto a flash drive and headed to Theron’s room.
A game–over chime from inside.
Then I heard Ophelia speak casually.
“Theron, go fix things with Lyra. She’s refusing to edit.”
Theron’s voice was indifferent.
“She’ll get over it.”
Another voice came through the phone.
“No way. Alpha Theron still hasn’t dumped that backwater Gamma girl? Didn’t you only chase her to
win a bet?”
“Still not bored yet? I seriously don’t get you.”
Something slammed into my wolf. But somehow, I wasn’t surprised.
He never loved us.
Ophelia clicked her tongue.
“What’s to get? Just dating for fun.”
“Friendship outlasts love. No matter what, Theron
cleans up my mess.”
The voice on the phone laughed.
“Brutally clear–eyed.”
“So, Alpha Theron, you feel the same?”
Theron was silent for a moment.
“I…”
Before he could finish, I pushed the door open.
The room fell silent. Both of them froze.
Theron frowned. “Ever heard of knocking?”
I set the flash drive on the table.
“Everything that needed to be handed over is on there.”
Theron straightened and asked, “What do you mean?”
I looked him in the eye.
“Let’s break up.”
