Ethan’s POV
I practically threw the door open when I heard footsteps outside.
“Maya, you’re home-”
My voice died instantly. Chloe stood there holding takeout
boxes, her smile freezing on her face.
“It’s just me, Ethan.”
I stared at her, my tone colder than I’d ever heard it sound.
“What are you doing here?”
“I figured you hadn’t eaten, so I brought you some food.”
She held the boxes out toward me, but I didn’t reach for
them.
“Get out.”
Chloe’s eyes went wide, “What?”
“I said leave. Now,”
Tears welled up in her eyes right away.
“You’ve never spoken to me like this. Did Maya fill your
head with lies? She said she’d step back and let me have you- I never thought she’d-”
I cut her off sharp.
“What did you just say?”
Chloe paled instantly.
I stepped forward, crowding her against the doorway.
“When did Maya ever say she’d hand me over to you?”
She panicked, fumbling over her words.
“I-I just misspoke, that’s all—”
“Did you ring my doorbell on purpose that night back on
June 21?”
Chloe bit down hard on her lip. After a second, she let out
a bitter laugh and dropped the act entirely.
“Yeah, I did it on purpose.”
“Ethan, what do I want? Don’t you really know?”
“Maya’s never been good enough for you. You’re a CEO,
founder of a public company now, and all she does is hang around the house making soup,”
I shook my head slowly, disgusted,
“You’ll never hold a candle to her.”
Her smile vanished completely,
“What’s so great about her anyway?”
“She stood outside my dad’s place begging for twenty
bucks once. You would’ve been embarrassed out of your
mind if you’d seen it.”
My chest twisted painfully.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me that?”
“Who cares? It was only twenty dollars.”
She waved it off dismissively. “I wouldn’t even bend down
to pick that kind of change off the sidewalk.”
“That twenty bucks meant everything to me!”
I practically roared the words. “That was her swallowing
all her pride just to take care of me.”
Chloe was so scared that she took a step back.
Everything clicked into place all at once.
“You called my mom to set up that family dinner. You
made sure the seafood platter got packed for me that
night knowing she’s allergic.”
“That ring was sized for your hand, not hers. You had the
Nasdaq livestream pushed straight to Maya’s phone.”
Chloe dropped her fake soft demeanor,
“So what if I did all that?”
“You’re the real messed-up one here, Ethan. You can’t act
like you’re totally innocent.”
“You kept stringing me along while swearing you loved
Maya.”
“You held my hand up on the Nasdaq stage. You told me I
made you happy”
Every sentence she spoke drained more color from my face.
She wasn’t lying. Chloe wasn’t the only one who hurt Maya. I was right there with her. I’m the one Maya should
hate the most.
Chloe let out a sharp scoff. “Don’t forget, my dad’s funding
is what got your company through the IPO smoothly.”
I fixed her with a cold stare. “From now on, you and every single person tied to your father are banned from stepping foot in my company.”
Chloe’s face went ashen. “You’ve lost your mind!”
“Go out”
She screamed sharply,
“You’ll regret this,”
I didn’t waste another second listening to her threats. I
booked the earliest flight out to Phoenix.
I needed to see Maya, Even if all I could do was tell her I’d messed up everything.
